Examining Faith

Responses from the symposium participants
(Chapter 4, part 3):

Focusing on how you empower one catechist from your parish: What have you learned from this catechist?

  • I have seen how this person's ministry touches the rest of her family. She has drawn the best out of them. In sharing her faith with others, she shares herself in so many other ways. She has a healthy vision of the Church and Church ministry because of her ministry as a catechist.
  • He has taught me not to overreact to negative situations. He has shown me how to cherish each moment as a graced moment from God.
  • The Spirit is always and forever present in each of us in a unique and challenging way.
  • Her continuous commitment to that ministry is very supportive to my understanding of commitment to priesthood. There is a generosity of spirit in her ministry which I admire and find exemplary for myself.
  • She has often been a sounding board for my critiques or my complaints and I find her insights to be most valuable and to be a corrective to my own viewpoint.
  • Young people even at the doctoral level have quite a different approach to Roman Catholic Christianity and catechetics than I did.
  • Patience; faith is a joyful gift and people can find self-worth by using their gifts.
  • Some of the difficulties of teaching and living as a wife and mother. Her love and generosity humble me.
  • Never to think too highly of myself and my own "expertise" because daily life and the lived experience of people is a powerful, grace-filled educational tool. Trust that God is working in and through all kinds of people.
  • How to be gracious and go the extra step.
  • Commitment to ministry and personal growth in faith; recognition of gifts and generosity in sharing them.
  • I have grown in faith and hope through the inspiration of her faith.
  • The ministry of the laity is concretized for me. The relationship lets me know where my people are in relation to understanding the word. There are many gifts but the same Spirit.
