Making a Parish
Banner
A few years ago the children in the Catechetical Formation Program of
my parish started a project that "will be with us always." We started
with a large piece of flannel cloth. Our aim was to make a patchwork quilt
of the whole parish. At first we had each grade level designed a "patch"
representing their group. Then we had patches for the First Communicant.
How could we leave out those who had been confirmed?
That was followed
by patches for the newly baptized and the newly married. Persons began
to memorialize those who had died by bringing in a patch of their dearly
departed. I did think we had gone a little far when I found a patch for
Wiggles the Puppy who had died, but when I saw the look on the face of
the child who had owned Wiggles I knew that even pets belong on Parish
Patchwork Banners.
Try one! There really
is no plan or method. You make it up as you go!
