To Parents and Catechists: Youngsters in this age group are developing strong friendships. Some of these friendships will last a lifetime. This prayer service calls them to look at the friendship they have with Jesus. You will need pieces of rope or string and circles or hoops made of cardboard.

Celebrating Our Friendship in Christ

Listen to God's Word
A loyal friend is like a safe shelter; find one, and you have found a treasure. Nothing else is as valuable; there is no way of putting a price on it. A loyal friend is like a medicine that keeps you in good health. Only those who love and respect God can find such a friend. This person can make real friendships, because he or she will treat friends with love and respect. From Sirach 6:14-17

Strengthening Friendship Ties
Cut a long piece of rope or string and attach it to a circle or hoop made of cardboard. As you pray for each of your friends, tie a knot in the rope or string to represent how you are strengthening your ties of friendship.

Then pray quietly about the meaning of friendship in your life. Jesus, help me to be a loyal friend... Jesus, help my friends and me...

Listen to God's Word
Jesus says, "My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you. The greatest love a person can have for his friends is to give his life for them. And you are my friends if you do what I command you." From John 15:12, 14

A Sign of Jesus' Friendship
Jesus loved each of us so much that he gave his life for us, dying for us on the cross. The cross is a symbol of Jesus' friendship with us. Design a cross and decorate it with signs of your friendship with Jesus. Then cut out the cross and attach it to the end of the "Friendship Rope." Hang your "Friendship Rope" in your room. Pray to Jesus often, asking him to help you share his friendship with others.

My Prayer Goes On
Remember Jesus' words when you are with your friends. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there with them. From Matthew 18:20
