Spirituality Resources
To Parents and Catechists: This experience invites the young people to pray their own version of the traditional "O" antiphons of Advent as they unite themselves with the rest of the Church in expectant waiting.

Praying The "Os" in Advent

In the last few weeks before her baby is born, the expectant mother often says to her little one, "O, come soon!" Mary may have spoken those words as she and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem. During Advent the Church is like an expectant mother, praying to the Savior, "O, come soon!"

Listen to God's Word
Oh, how I pray that salvation will come to Israel from Zion! From Psalm 53:6

An Advent Tradition
One lovely Advent tradition is the praying of the "O" verses. They help us express how eager we are for the Savior's coming. Pray these "O"s with your own endings for each verse.

  • O Word of God, come and...
  • O Lord of Freedom, come and...
  • O Son of David, come and...
  • O Redeemer, come and...
  • O Sun of Justice, come and...
  • O King of Nations, come and...
  • O God-With-Us, come and...

Listen to God's Word
From you shall come a leader who is to shepherd my people Israel. From Matthew 2:6

Making the "O" Verses My Own
To honor the Savior, God-with-us, pray each Advent "O." As you pray, brighten each flame with paint or markers. You may want to follow each "O" verse with a Hail Mary.

My Prayer Goes On
Oh, that our salvation would come!
