|To Parents and Catechists: Invite your ten to twelve-year-olds to focus on Saint Joseph during the following Christmas reflection. Then give them the experience of centering contemplatively on the name of Jesus. Provide as much seasonal atmosphere as you can. |
A Dream Come True-- Christmas
Listen to God's Word
A Child is born to us!
A Son is given to us!
And he will be our Ruler.
He will be called, "Wonderful Counselor,"
"Mighty God," "Eternal Father,"
"Prince of Peace."
A Christmas Reflection
"From the time I was a child, I heard these words of the prophet, reminding me of God's promise to save us, God's people. I never imagined that I would play a part in making this dream come true!
I am Joseph, a descendant of King David and the husband of Mary. Before Jesus was born, Mary and I made a long and difficult journey to the town of Bethlehem. How worried I was when we arrived and could not find a place to sleep. Mary was very tired and so close to giving birth.
God was with us at every moment. Finally, all that we had dreamed of came true. The Prince of Peace, the Son of God was born. And he and his Mother were given to me to care for and protect."
Often Saint Joseph seems to be in the background of the Christmas story. But how strong and wise he must have been to be chosen to care for Mary and the infant Jesus.
Take a few minutes to read Matthew 1:18-2:23. What questions might you like to ask Joseph? What feelings do you have about him?
Listen to God's Word
The angel said to Joseph, "You will name him Jesus-because he will save his people from their sins."
From Matthew 1:21
Praying Jesus' Name
Like Joseph, you have the joy of using the name of Jesus as part of your Christmas prayer. Get into your favorite prayer position. Close your eyes and begin to breathe deeply and regularly. As you breathe, softly repeat the name Jesus. Breathe in on the first syllable; exhale on the second syllable. Let your feelings about Jesus flood through you.
